Hadrian's Wall
- Hadrian 117-138
- Julius Caesar 100BC-44BC invaded and set up a Roman Briton to the south but he and successive emperors could not defeat the northern tribes.
- Path of civil/military promotion in the Roman Empire
- Hadrian decided to stop the incessant growth of the empire with the concurrent problems associated so he decided enough was enough and set about setting limits to the borders. Hence the wall.
- Wall started in 122
- Moved North after Hadrian's death to the Antonine Wall in 142 but this was abandoned shortly thereafter and the line moved back to Hadrian's wall.
- Romans abandoned Briton by 410 but some parts of the wall fortifications were taken over by local Britons.
